Description/Taste
Basil, often called sweet basil from the herbaceous plant Ocimum basilicum, was first cultivated in India and has been made a staple of Italian cuisine. It is a member of the mint family and is comparable to the taste of anise. Whole basil is easily added to any recipe and is best added at the end of cooking to preserve flavor or for a milder flavor at the beginning. Whole basil is found to be the main ingredient in the Italian oil and herb sauce, pesto.
