Black pepper is produced from a flowering vine in the Piperaceae family and is cultivated for its fruit which is dried and used as a spice or seasoning. The fruit is known as a peppercorn when dried. Native to China and southwest Asia the black peppercorn has been used since ancient times as a flavor enhancer and for medicinal purposes. Black pepper has a strong aroma, sharp flavor, used in cuisines throughout the world and is a universal table condiment.
