Description/Taste
The typically misshapen Pink Pearl is wrapped in a pale, dull yellowish-brown skin with a slight pearl blush. Revealing a crisp pink interior, the flavor is sweetly-tart.
Seasons/Availability
The Pink Pearl apple is available from Windrose Farms from late summer to early fall.
Current Facts
The Pink Pearl is among hundreds of heirloom varieties that is near extinction. Only a handful of farmers in the U.S. are still growing and harvesting them.
Geography/History
In 1944, Pink Pearl heirloom apples were hybridized in Northern California crossed with an apple named Surprise, a red-fleshed rather sour variety. It is thought that this latter apple was derived from a century old variety of red-fleshed Turkish crab apples. Albert Etter is said to have developed Pink Pearl to create a sweeter tasting apple.
