Description/Taste
Pacific Beauty apples are medium in size and oblong in shape. The skin is smooth and glossy with a light-yellow base and red and light pink blush. The skin is also speckled with faint white lenticels, or spots. The firm flesh is cream colored to white and has a central, fibrous core that runs the length of the fruit encasing a few small, dark brown seeds. When the seed cavity of the core is slice in half, it has a five-pointed star shape. Pacific Beauty apples are crisp, rich, and juicy with an exceptionally sweet flavor.
Seasons/Availability
Pacific Beauty apples are available during the fall.
Current Facts
Trademarked under the name Sciearly, the Pacific Beauty apple is a cross between a Gala and Splendour apple. It is a close relative of the Pacific Rose and Pacific Queen, both of which come from the same parental cross.
Nutritional Value
Pacific Beauty apples are rich in dietary fiber, specifically pectin which has been show to reduce cholesterol and slow glucose metabolism in diabetics. They also contain vitamins A and C as well as trace amounts of B, most of which can be found in the skin.
Applications
The high sugar content of the Pacific Beauty apple results in a fruit that is not only excellent for fresh eating but also a choice apple for use in dessert preparations. Add its sweetness to cakes, cookies, pastries and muffins. Cook down to make sauces and preserves or combine with slices of tart apple such as Granny Smith or Pippin in pies and tarts. Pacific Beauty apples will compliment savory applications as well. Try roasted or sautéed for a side dish or topping, slice and add to green, chopped and stacked salads or serve as an accompaniment for flavorful cheeses.
Geography/History
The Pacific Beauty apple was first developed in the early 1990’s as part of the Pacific Series at the Havelock North, New Zealand Apple Breeding Program. Similar to other popular New Zealand apples such as Braeburn, Royal Gala and Jazz the Pacific Beauty is trademarked and exported by Enza, formerly known as the New Zealand Apple and Pear Marketing Board. Today they are grown in New Zealand and Washington State.
