Current Facts
Firestix™ are a trademarked blossom a part of a line of specialty, edible flowers grown by Fresh Origins Farm in San Diego, California. The flame-like flowers are harvested from the amaranth plant and are used by chefs and mixologists as an accent in sweet preparations, savory dishes, and cocktails. Firestix™ are one of the most popular varieties of edible flowers created by Fresh Origins and are available year-round. The vibrant blossoms are promoted as an entirely edible garnish that can be vertically placed on dishes to add height, placed flat for increased visual appeal, or strategically placed to add bright coloring. The flowers are also durable, allowing them to be packaged for takeout, and the mild flavor of the flower lends itself to a wide variety of appetizers, desserts, beverages, and main dishes. In addition to Firestix™, the flowers are also available in a Firestix Mix™ and a Micro Flower™, a unique line of tiny edible flowers.
Nutritional Value
Firestix™ contain vitamins A and C to strengthen the immune system and protect the body against free radicals. The flowers also provide some minerals, including potassium, calcium, iron, and phosphorus.
Applications
Firestix™ are best used fresh as an edible garnish. The blossoms have a hardy nature, withstanding moisture, steam, and some heat, and will retain their bright hue when added to culinary applications. Firestix™ can be delicately layered over seafood dishes, used as a colorful accent to grain bowls, added into salads, or placed on top of soups. The flowers can also be placed on top of desserts such as cakes, sorbet, pastries, and sundaes to create height, used as a garnish in dips and sauces, displayed over sushi, or used as a focal point on main dishes to attract the eye. The mild corn flavor of Firestix™ pairs well with Latin and Hispanic cuisine and ingredients, including fruits such as blood oranges, apples, and grapes, potatoes, asparagus, bell peppers, onions, seafood, and meats such as poultry, beef, and pork. Firestix™ will keep 4 to 5 days when stored in the refrigerator.
