Description/Taste
It is obvious where the Black Splendor plum gets its name with its blue-black skin and beet-red flesh. It is a larger than average plum and typically an early ripening plum. It is a clingstone variety, meaning that the central pit does not cleanly separate away from the flesh. The inky fruit is moderately tart balanced by rich sweet flavors.
Seasons/Availability
The Black Splendor plum is available late spring and summer.
Current Facts
Plums are a stone fruit and members of the Rosaceae family and classified under the genus, Prunus, along with peaches, cherries, almonds and apricots. The benchmark plum variety is the Santa Rosa plum, a Japanese plum developed in America by Luther Burbank in 1906. The Black Splendor plum is larger, tarter and an earlier ripening variety when compared to the Santa Rosa.
