Cotton Candy® grapes are medium to large in size and are oval to oblong in shape, growing in loose, sizeable clusters. The green skin is thick, smooth, and firm and the flesh is translucent green, plump, seedless, and juicy. Cotton Candy® grapes have a flavor that is unmistakably like cotton candy. It is very sweet, with a higher Brix level than the average green table grape, and has a soft, but crunchy texture. There is very little tartness, which holds the sweetness on the tongue, and a finish with hints of vanilla.
Cotton Candy® grapes are available in the late summer through early fall.
The Cotton Candy® grape is the registered name given to these uniquely flavored hybrid grapes developed by The Grapery® of Bakersfield, CA in conjunction with International Fruit Genetics, a Southern California breeding program. The grapes embody the sugary sweet flavor of the county fair and circus staple treat. The flavors of a concord-like grape were combined with firm, crisp qualities of a Vitis vinifera variety to create the Cotton Candy® grape, but the exact parents are considered trade secrets and are unknown. These designer fruits are a successful example of old-fashioned hand pollination and a painstaking breeding selection without the use of additives or GMO’s.
Cotton Candy® grapes are a good source of vitamins A, C, and K, antioxidants, and flavonoids.
Cotton Candy® grapes were created as a table grape to be enjoyed fresh out of hand. They are an appealing sweet snack for kids and are a healthy alternative to sugary candy. Due to their low acid content and vanilla-like flavor, they are most suitable for sweet applications and baked goods such as muffins, ice cream syrups, and sorbets. When used raw they are an excellent crunchy addition to fruit salads. When roasted, their flavor intensifies and develops a rich caramelized flavor, pairing well with both desserts and salty cheeses. They will keep up to a week when stored in a sealed container in the refrigerator.
Cotton Candy® grapes were developed to create a wider selection of flavorful grapes. David Cain, horticulturalist and co-creator of the grapes, wanted to bring new, natural flavors to the market because he believed that many of the grapes on the store shelves today have lost their flavor due to years of breeding. His goal was to create a grape selection that is similar to the wide varieties of apples that are offered in store. It took over a decade of research and development for the Cotton Candy® grape to reach consumers’ palates. Cotton Candy® grapes were created by cross-breeding multiple varieties, and although the grapes have been available in limited quantities since 2011, supplies have almost doubled in subsequent years, and the demand is high since the grapes have a short season. In addition to the sweet taste, Cotton Candy® grapes also contain antioxidants that can help reduce inflammation in the body and flavonoids that can help boost brain productivity, so they are advertised as a much healthier snack than candy or sugary treats.
Cotton Candy® grapes were created in 1996 by Jack Pandol of The Grapery® in Bakersfield, California. With generations of family experience in the vineyards and a degree in Viticulture from UC Davis, Jack began breeding exciting new varieties through a partnership with David Cain at International Fruit Genetics and the first Cotton Candy® grapes were released to the public in 2011. Cotton Candy® grapes are available at select retailers in the United States.
