Current Facts
Cotton Candy™ grapes are a uniquely flavored hybrid grape developed by fruit geneticist Dr. David Cain of International Fruit Genetics, IFG, in Bakersfield, California. The grapes embody the sugary sweet flavor of the county fair and circus staple treat. The flavors of a concord-like grape were combined with the firm, crisp qualities of a Vitis vinifera variety to create Cotton Candy™ grapes. These designer fruits are a successful example of traditional hand pollination and breeding selection without the use of additives or GMOs.
Nutritional Value
Cotton Candy™ grapes are a source of vitamins A, C, and K, antioxidants, and flavonoids.
Applications
Cotton Candy™ grapes were created as a table grape variety to be enjoyed fresh, out of hand. They are an appealing sweet snack for kids and a healthy alternative to sugary candy. Due to their low acid content and vanilla-like flavor, they are most suitable for sweet applications and baked goods such as muffins, ice cream syrups, and sorbets. When used raw, they are an excellent crunchy addition to fruit salads. When roasted, their flavor intensifies and develops a rich caramelized flavor, pairing well with both desserts and salty cheeses. They will keep up to a week when stored in a sealed container in the refrigerator.
Ethnic/Cultural Info
Cotton Candy™ grapes were developed to create a wider selection of flavorful grapes. David Cain, fruit geneticist and creator of the grapes, wanted to bring new, natural flavors to the market because he believed that many of the grapes on the store shelves today had lost their flavor due to years of breeding. His goal was to create a grape selection similar to the wide varieties of apples that are offered in store. It took over a decade of research and development for Cotton Candy™ grapes to reach commercial markets. Cotton Candy™ grapes were created by cross-breeding multiple varieties, and although the grapes have been available in limited quantities since 2011, supplies have almost doubled in subsequent years. In addition to its distinct taste, Cotton Candy™ grapes also contain antioxidants, promoted as a healthier alternative to candy or sugary treats.
