Description/Taste
Micro Lemon basil greens are very small in size, averaging 5-7 centimeters in length, and have 2-4 tiny, bright green leaves connected to a thin, pale green stem. The first set of leaves to open, or the cotyledons, have a rounded spade-shape while the second pair, or true leaves, are more oval with somewhat pointed tips and resemble a tiny version of mature basil. Micro Lemon basil offers a tender texture with a robust lemony citrus flavor and classic herbaceous tones of basil mixed with sweet anise.
Seasons/Availability
Micro Lemon basil is available year-round.
Current Facts
Micro Lemon basil greens are the young, tiny edible versions of the mature herb that are harvested 16-25 days after sowing. Typically grown in greenhouses with ample natural sunlight and good air circulation, Micro Lemon basil has become well-known for its citrusy flavor and is most popularly used by chefs as a garnish to add texture, flavor, and color.
Nutritional Value
Micro Lemon basil contains beta-carotene, vitamin K, potassium, manganese, copper, and magnesium.
Applications
Micro Lemon basil greens are best suited for raw applications as their delicate and tender texture will not hold up against high heat. They are most commonly used as a garnish and can be used in any dish that calls for a light, lemon flavor. They can be incorporated into soups, stews, curries, steamed vegetable dishes, grilled meat dishes, or stir-fries. They can also be used in Asian inspired dishes, desserts such as ice cream, and even fruity cocktails like mojitos, margaritas, gimlets, or martinis. Micro Lemon basil pairs well with meats such as chicken, beef, or seafood, heirloom tomatoes, garlic, onion, mint, cumin, coriander, turmeric, lemongrass, peanuts, sesame oil, blueberries, strawberries, peaches, watermelon, and vanilla. They will keep 5-7 days when stored unwashed, in a sealed container, and in the refrigerator.
