Ethnic/Cultural Info
Candy onions are a day-neutral or mid-day variety, which is a new classification of onions that can grow in almost any type of climate except for extreme north and deep south regions. The size of an onion is often determined by the amount of daylight it receives, and more varieties like the Candy onion are being created to provide adaptability and the ability to be grown around the world. This variety is also favored by home gardeners for its ease of growth and mild, sweet flavor.
Geography/History
The exact origins of the Candy onion are unknown, but the variety was created to be grown in multiple climates and is one of the few varieties that can be grown year-round. Today Candy onions are available at farmers markets and in home gardens in the United States.
