Description/Taste
Candy SnapsĀ® grapes are medium in size and are round to oval in shape, averaging 2-3 centimeters in diameter and growing in loose, medium-sized clusters. The thin, dark purple skin is smooth and covered in a white waxy residue, also known as bloom, which protects the fruit from pests, decay, and moisture loss. The translucent flesh is juicy and seedless, though some undeveloped seeds may be present but are undetectable when consumed. Candy SnapsĀ® grapes are crisp and sweet with strawberry undertones.
Seasons/Availability
Candy SnapsĀ® grapes are available in the summer.
Current Facts
Candy SnapsĀ® grapes are a red seedless table grape and a hybrid cultivar of Vitis vinifera. Created by International Fruit Genetics, a Southern California breeding program, the grapes were developed from a laborious process which involved removing the grape embryos and growing them in individual test tubes. Candy SnapsĀ® grapes are a part of the IFGās novelty variety line and are classified as a table grape with a unique, sweet flavor.
Nutritional Value
Candy SnapsĀ® grapes are a good source of flavonoids, antioxidants, and vitamins A, C, and K.
Applications
Candy SnapsĀ® grapes are best suited for raw applications as they were designed to be consumed fresh, out of hand. They can be added to green salads or fruit salads for a sweet flavor, or they can be frozen and used as a sweet treat in drinks. Candy SnapsĀ® grapes can also be served with cheese boards and appetizer trays or used as a topping for ice cream and sorbets. They will keep up to a week when stored in the refrigerator.
Ethnic/Cultural Info
International Fruit Genetics (IFG) was established in 2001 and has been engineering new grape varieties to meet market demand for flavorful, unique grapes. Using carefully controlled greenhouses and high-tech laboratories, new varieties are developed using the process known as embryo rescue, which is a technique that pollinates an emasculated flower and grows that immature seed in a test tube. Once the seed begins to sprout, it is then planted in the greenhouse where it is grown naturally. This process has allowed IFG to carefully control flavors and textures of the varieties which have led to the creation of sweet grapes such as the Candy SnapsĀ® grape.
Geography/History
Candy SnapsĀ® grapes were created by research scientist Dr. David Cain at International Fruit Genetics based in Bakersfield, California, in the early 2000s. Today they are available at select specialty markets across the United States.
