Description/Taste
Red Clementine tangerines are larger than most clementine varieties, averaging 7-10 cm in diameter. They have a thin, loose, easy peeling skin that is reddish-orange with a slightly dimpled surface and rich oil content. The flesh has large pulp sacs that are faintly tinted with magenta striations. The Red Clementine tangerine is very juicy and sweet with moderately low acidity with distinct berry and tropical flavors and a classic sweet citrus finish.
Seasons/Availability
Red Clementine tangerines are available mid-winter through early spring.
Current Facts
The clementine is small and easy pealing variety of citrus that is sterile, hence its desirable seedless nature. The Red Clementine tangerine is a variation of Citrus clementia first created in Italy by crossing a Clemenules mandarin with a Tarocco blood orange. Clemenules is an early ripening tangerine and the most widely grown clementine in Spain. Tarocco blood orange is one of the major blood orange varieties of the world. Its distinctive color is a natural mutation from the presence of anthocyanin, the same plant compound that is responsible for the color of pomegranates. The Red Clementine tangerines has the sweet juiciness of a Clemenules and the faintly blushed flesh of a Tarocco.
Nutritional Value
Like all citrus, the Red Clementine tangerine is rich in vitamin C. They also supply B vitamins, Folate, Calcium, Iron, Potassium, Copper and dietary fiber.
Applications
The Red Clementine tangerines bi-colored flesh is best exhibited when cut cross-wise in wheel-like slices and make beautiful additions to cakes and salads. They are excellent for juicing due to their succulent seedless flesh, for use in frozen desserts, cocktails or vinaigrettes. Pair Red Clementine tangerines with olives, honey, peppery greens, avocado, citrus, seafood and Mediterranean and Middle Eastern cuisine. Red Clementine tangerines will keep at room temperature but should be refrigerated for longer storage.
Geography/History
Red Clementines tangerines were first hybridized in Italy in the 2000’s and later planted in the United States in 2008. They are currently gown by Sun West Fruit Co Inc in Parlier, CA where they are patented as "Ruby Tangos Mandarins". Like the blood orange, their distinctive color requires a chilly winter to develop properly.
