Inventory, lb : 0
Description/Taste
Kissabel Jaune is a distinctive looking apple, bred for its coloring. Jaune completes the trio with other Kissabel varities, which are red and orange. On the outside, the skin of Kissabel Jaune is yellow with prominent visible lenticels throughout. Inside, the flesh of this variety is white and pink, with more coloring directly under the skin. The texture of the Kissabel Jaune is crisp and crunchy, and the flesh is aromatic and sweet with hints of berries, which is also derived from its wild apple heritage.
Seasons/Availability
Kissabel Jaune is available mid fall through winter.
Current Facts
Kissabel Jaune (or “yellow” in French) is a newly available variety of apple, botanic name Malus domestica. The Jaune variety is part of a trio developed by Ifored. The other two varieties are Kissabel Rouge, which is a deep red on the outside with red and white flesh, and Kissabel Orange, with orange skin and red flesh. The Kissabel brand of apples was bred as a cross with wild, red-fleshed crab apples.
Nutritional Value
Apples contain several beneficial nutrients, especially in the skin. Apples contain soluble and insoluble fiber, which keeps the cardiovascular and digestive systems healthy and prevents heart disease. Apples also contain Vitamin C, along with smaller amounts of potassium, calcium, phosphorous, and iron.
Applications
Prepare Kissabel Jaune apples to show off their distinctively-colored flesh. Eat fresh out of hand as is; slice into salads with nuts, cheese, or other produce such as cabbage, pears, and celery root; or bake into open tarts. Kissabel Jaune has good storage capabilities. Store in cool, dry storage such as a refrigerator crisper drawer or basement.
Ethnic/Cultural Info
All three types of Kissabel apples were developed by Ifored, a consortium of 14 different partners around the world who work together to breed, develop, and market new apple varities. Ifored is an example of the process of developing modern apples, based on science and marketing and with an eye toward visual uniqueness and unusual colors. Kissabel Jaune is only one example of the brand, and may soon be followed by other apples with different color combinations.
Geography/History
The first Kissabel Jaune apples were grown in France. They are able to be grown around the world, including countries such as Australia, the United States, Chile, South Africa, Argentina, and the United Kingdom. The first commercial orchards of Kissabel apples were planted in 2016. Commercial testing in four European countries took place in 2018 and 2019.
