Description/Taste
Micro Mint Mix™ consists of multiple varieties of mint that vary in shapes, textures, and flavors. The small greens are comprised of leaves that range in appearance from oval, broad, and flat with scalloped edges, lanceolate with smooth curves, to textured with prominent veining and serrated edges. The leaves are generally dark green to bright green, and the slender stems have a succulent nature, contributing to the microgreen’s crisp and tender consistency. Micro Mint Mix™ is aromatic and provides a unique combination of fresh, green, sweet, and herbal flavors mixed with bright, clean notes of spearmint and citrus.
Seasons/Availability
Micro Mint Mix™ is available year-round.
Current Facts
Micro Mint Mix™ is a combination of young, edible seedlings that are a part of a trademarked line of specialty microgreens grown by Fresh Origins Farm in San Diego, California. The refreshing blend of different mint varieties contributes clean flavors, textures, and shapes to culinary dishes and was specially curated to provide chefs with a unique, edible garnish. Microgreens are generally harvested 1 to 2 weeks after sowing and are gathered at the peak of their growth cycle to ensure optimum flavor and nutritional properties. Micro Mint Mix™ adds visual depth with its textured, delicate greens and can be individually placed on desserts, cocktails, and main dishes or sprinkled across larger preparations for greater impact. Chefs also use Micro Mint Mix™ to build complexity within sweet and savory dishes quickly. The microgreens elevate the dining experience by adding a cooling flavor sensation without overpowering the dish's main elements.
Nutritional Value
Micro Mint Mix™ is a source of vitamin C, an antioxidant that strengthens the immune system, boosts collagen, and reduces inflammation. The blend also contains some beta-carotene, a nutrient converted into vitamin A in the body to maintain healthy organs, and provides lower amounts of magnesium to regulate blood pressure, calcium to protect bones, potassium to balance fluid levels, copper, and iron. It is important to note that the vitamins and minerals are found primarily within the leaves and not in the stems of the microgreens. Growing conditions also significantly impact the nutritional content, and Fresh Origins cultivates their microgreens in a natural setting, an ideal climate for healthy, optimal greens.
Applications
Micro Mint Mix™ is best suited as an edible garnish and provides added textural, visual, and flavorful elements to a wide variety of culinary dishes. The tender, crisp greens are showcased when consumed fresh, and the mix should be added at the end of preparations to avoid wilting. Micro Mint Mix™ can be floated on soups and curries, tossed into green salads, mixed in with fresh fruit, yogurt, and dips, used as an edible garnish, or stirred into pasta. The bright, crisp greens can also be mixed into stir-fries, sprinkled over seafood, or incorporated into fresh spring rolls. Beyond savory preparations, Micro Mint Mix™ shines in desserts, adding a refreshing, herbal flavor, and can be used to decorate cakes, sorbets, and tarts. Micro Mint Mix™ is also popularly used in mixology, muddled into cocktails, garnished over fruit punches, or stirred into teas and sparkling beverages. Micro Mint Mix™ pairs well with fruits such as watermelon, berries, and citrus, meats such as poultry, veal, and turkey, seafood, herbs such as parsley, cilantro, basil, and tarragon, watercress, nasturtiums, chocolate, cucumbers, peas, and squash. Micro Mint Mix™ will generally keep 5 to 7 days stored in the refrigerator in a sealed container.
Ethnic/Cultural Info
Fresh Origins has created over 30 unique microgreen mixes, including Micro Mint Mix™, to provide chefs with a simple but impactful addition to cocktails and desserts. Microgreens add flavor, textures, and visual beauty, and the tiny greens are a surprising garnish to delight consumers. In the Southern United States, the term lagniappe refers to a small gift given in a sales transaction as a gesture of goodwill. The word lagniappe was created in the 1840s from a mixture of Spanish words and phrases and was first used in New Orleans, noted by famous author Mark Twain in his book Life on the Mississippi. By the mid 20th century, many retailers, restaurants, and businesses were familiar with the term across the United States, and the notion of lagniappe has continued to be used to connect and build relationships with consumers. In the modern-day, microgreens are a contemporary lagniappe in cocktails, as the tiny greens surprise consumers with their bold flavors and aesthetic qualities. Microgreens are also being utilized as lagniappes in takeout desserts. By incorporating microgreens into a small container that consumers can sprinkle over their dessert before eating at home, a memorable, emotional experience is being created. Emotional dining connects a chef and consumer, creating an elevated experience, encouraging the consumer to return to the restaurant.
