Description/Taste
Black Mission figs are teardrop in shape and have a thin black skin that surrounds a red colored flesh. They are medium to large in size and have a greenish-yellow layer inside that surrounds the inner flesh. They are very sweet in flavor, but lack richness. Dried figs have many different cultivars or varieties. The most common being the Black Mission, the Calimyrna and the Tena fig. Though they each offer a slightly different flavor profile, overall they each have a sweet delicate taste with a soft chewy texture.

Applications
Black Mission figs can be grilled, baked, wrapped in prosciuto and even jammed. They are often used in making tarts, cakes, or any other baked goods. Dried figs are also excellent in salads and desserts.
Geography/History
The Mission Black fig has been around for centuries and dates back as far as 5,000 BC where it has been found in excavated tombs. It is thought to be indigenous to western Asia but has been spread throughout the Mediterranean region for several centuries. The Black Mission fig is also known as the "common fig" and has many medicinal functions. In 1768 it was first introduced in San Diego by Franciscan missionaries and made its way up the California coast through the mission system. Black Mission figs are widely adapted and favor hot, dry weather.
