Geography/History
A European import, it is thought the wild mustard plant was brought to California by Franciscan Father Serra who planted it as a "golden pathway to find his way back home" to Spain. Others say it is more likely the tiny seeds were actually accidental travelers that were in bedding or possibly the hair of cattle or sheep. Since ancient times, annual spring festivals in south Asia and rural north India have been celebrating the vivid yellow of mustard flowers that cover miles and miles. Flourishing in the California climate, fields are beautifully covered with a dense blanket of bright yellow mustard flowers every spring. A member of the genus Brassica kaber, mustard flowers grow throughout the United States.
