Description/Taste
Antarès apples are medium-sized and fairly wide and flat, with a red-orange skin streaked with gold. The texture is crisp, juicy, and tender, while the flavor is both sweet and subtly acidic, with a nice balance between the two; it also has notes of pear and is very aromatic. Some have compared it to apples such as the Renata and the Golden Delicious, because of its sour/acidic taste.
Seasons/Availability
Antarès apples are available from fall through spring.
Current Facts
Antarès apples are a French variety of Malus domestica, resistant to disease. This variety needs approximately 70 percent less treatment in the form of chemicals, appealing to consumers who care about the potential harmful effects of pesticides on health and the environment. They are sold exclusively by Apple-Bird brand in Europe, and Giumarra Wenatchee in the United States. The parentage of Antarès includes Elstar.
Nutritional Value
Apples are full of beneficial nutrients, and make great snacks or additions to meals or desserts. They contain one-fifth of the recommended daily dietary fiber intake, which contributes to healthy cardiovascular and digestive systems. Apples are contain Vitamin C, potassium, and phytochemicals key in strengthening the immune system.
Applications
This is a versatile apple, good for fresh eating and for cooking. Pair with sharp, strong cheeses to match the acidic content. Antarès apples store well, but taste better when used promptly, in the fall to early winter. As they sit in storage, this apple can soften and the taste becomes watered down.
Ethnic/Cultural Info
Many apples in recent years have been produced by large produce companies, sold under licenses. These companies are looking to capitalize on new, specialized fruits created in breeding programs. In the case of Antarès, as with other new varieties, producers were interested in creating a disease-resistant apple in order to cut down on the need for harmful pesticides.
Geography/History
The Antarès apple was first developed and grown by Apple-Bird in the Loire Valley, in France. Apple-Bird continues to have exclusive distribution rights to Antarès in most of the world, and grows them in both France and Chile. In the United States, Giumarra Wenatchee recently began Antarès distribution.
