Current Facts
The Cripps Pink apple is more often known as the Pink Lady®, which is a trademarked name. In fact, it was one of the first apples to receive a registered name and to be marketed under that name. The Cripps Pink is a cross of the Golden Delicious and the Lady Williams varieties, with the botanical name Malus domestica. It is also sometimes called the Queen of Apples.
Nutritional Value
Apples, including Cripps Pink, are great sources of Vitamin C, Vitamin A, calcium, and iron, along with pectin, which is good for digestion. They are low calorie and low in fat, and are a healthy addition to snacks and meals.
Applications
This apple has a great flavor and texture for eating fresh. They brown in air slowly, so they are great for salads and fruit trays, as well as eating out of hand. The Cripps Pink also makes a good apple to cook into sauces and pies because of its high sugar content. Cripps Pinks store very well, and can be kept for three months or more under proper conditions; their flavor is actually enhanced by a month's storage. They can be left at room temperature for up to two weeks, or for longer in the refrigerator. To enjoy their flavor at its best, take them out of the fridge an hour before eating.
Ethnic/Cultural Info
Cripps Pink apples are very popular in Australia. Just ten years after being introduced to the Australian market, there were over a million Cripps Pink apple trees in the country, which produced 10,000 metric tons of fruit.
Geography/History
John Cripps developed a new apple in the 1973 in Western Australia, which was then given his name. The new variety was introduced to the Australian market in 1985 and to the United States in the 1990s. They are now grown in over a dozen countries around the world, and sold in many more. In the United States, they are grown mostly in Washington state.
