Junamis are often compared to Elstars, one of this variety's parents. They are generally round, but can appear in a range of shapes and are frequently asymmetrical. The skin is red and green, while the flesh is yellow. The flavor of the Junami is sweet, but not overly so. The crisp flesh also imparts a tangy and perfumed flavor. The flavor develops and improves with time, so most Junamis are not made available until a few months after harvest.
Junami apples are available in the mid-winter through the early summer months.
Junami apples (pronounced Joo-NAh-mee) are a Swiss apple that is growing in popularity in the United States. This apple, a variety of Malus domestica, claims Idared, Maigold, and Elstar as its ancestors. It is also sometimes known as Diwa and Milwa.
There are many health benefits with all apples since they are low in calories and high in needed nutrients such as Vitamin C, potassium, and fiber. They also contain antioxidants such as quercetin, which have anti-inflammatory properties.
The Junami is best for fresh eating, or for juicing, especially since it has been described by some as thirst quenching. However, Junamis can also be used for cooking and baking. Choose apples that are free from bruises and that are firm without any soft spots. This variety stores well in the refrigerator.
For most of the variety's history, Junamis were produced under strict conditions only in northwestern Europe, where they were unable to reach most American consumers. Today, it is increasingly being recognized in U.S. stores, and will likely be increasing in visibility in the future.
Although the Junami was originally grown in Europe, they are produced in the United States by Rainier Fruit Company in Saleh, Washington.
