Lemon Drop melons have the initial appearance of their parent melon, the Galia. Mostly round with a slight oblong shape, they should feel heavy for their size, averaging 3 pounds in weight. They have a golden beige skin with a rough netted texture and pale lime longitudinal grooves. When opened, its dense and succulent pale green flesh bears a central cluster of seeds which are easily removed. Unlike many other netted melons though, the Lemon Drop has no floral aromatics and minimal sub-acid sweetness, rather its flavors are filled with the overt signature sweet tartness of lemon and subtle hints of honeydew and watermelon.
Lemon Drop melons are available during the summer months.
The Lemon Drop melon, sometimes spelled Lemondrop, is a hybrid variety of Cucumis melo in the plant family Cucurbitaceae. It was created to provide a melon that had a higher acidity reminiscent of the the familiar candy, the lemondrop. Melons have been hybridized for centuries and are sometimes hard to distinguish between the different groups. The classifications are based on several distinctions that include both the exterior rind and interior flesh. The most commonly accepted melon classifications are: winter, netted, cantaloupe, watermelon and gourd. The Lemon Drop is classified as a netted melon variety.
Lemon Drop melons are a good source of vitamins C and B6 as well as potassium and fiber.
The Lemon Drop melon is best suited for fresh eating or pureed into a chilled summer soup, sorbet or cocktail beverage. Its sweet tart nature lends itself to pairing with sweeter melons, dried fruit, mild and spicy salad greens, ginger, chiles, seafood, proscuitto, tomatoes, feta, herbs such as basil and cilantro and nuts such as hazelnuts, pistachios and pepitas. Lemon Drop melons will keep at room temperature for up to a week once fully ripe. Cut melon should be stored in the refrigerator in a sealed container and consumed within four days.
The Lemon Drop melon is the hybrid result of successive breeding efforts of marrying wild melon varieties with high citric acid content and sweet Galia melons. It was first released in 2013 by Martori Farms of Arizona, United States. Martori grows and distributes the Lemon Drop melon under the brand "Kandy". The melons thrive in hot dry weather with controlled irrigation so as to develop high sugar levels.
