Catalina plums are a large, black plum variety. They have a round to heart shape and grow to about 6 to 8 centimeters in diameter. Catalina plums have a deep purple skin with a faint white fuzz. It's flesh is creamy white in color and has a juicy, crunchy texture. The flavor is exceptionally sweet with very little acidity.
Catalina plums are available during the summer months.
Catalina plums are botanically known as Prunus salicina. They are considered a European plum variety with its dark purple skin and amber flesh, characteristic of this variety. European plums are often called prunes and are mostly freestone, meaning they do not cling to the pit.
