Description/Taste
Micro Flowers Blend™ is a crafted mix of very small flowers, averaging less than three centimeters in diameter, that vary in color and shape, depending on the specific variety. The tiny flowers consist of thin, delicate, and flat petals ranging from narrow and elongated, round and frilled, broad and curved, to oval with a tapered tip, bearing a soft, smooth, and silky consistency. The petals also differ in colors, displaying vibrant hues of bright yellow, orange, white, ruby red, magenta, periwinkle, to royal purple. Micro Flowers Blend™ contains a crisp, succulent, and tender texture with a faint, perfumed scent. The colorful flowers also showcase many distinct flavors with mild, sweet, tangy, savory, herbal, and citrusy nuances.
Seasons/Availability
Micro Flowers Blend™ is available year-round.
Current Facts
Micro Flowers Blend™ is a mixture of small, edible flowers that are a part of a trademarked line of specialty MicroFlowers™ grown by Fresh Origins Farm in San Diego, California. MicroFlowers™ are one of Fresh Origin Farm’s most popular innovations and were designed to complement their extensive line of microgreens. The diminutive flowers are generally smaller than a quarter and offer a wide array of flavors, vivacious colors, shapes, and textures to elevate culinary and mixology experiences. Within the Micro Flowers Blend™, flower varieties will change with seasonal availability, often including Micro Star Flower™, Micro Sun Daisy™, Micro Dianthus™, and Micro Orchid™, the first flower ever created in the MicroFlowers™ line. Each Micro Flowers Blend™ is unique, and the flowers incorporated into the blend are harvested at peak freshness to ensure optimal flavor and appearance. The delicate blooms can be used whole as a garnish, sprinkled over preparations, or individual flowers can be selectively placed to make a colorful statement.
Nutritional Value
Micro Flowers Blend™ is a source of vitamins A and C, nutrients with antioxidant-like properties to strengthen the immune system, boost collagen production within the skin, and defend the cells against damage inflicted by external environmental aggressors. The flowers also contain anthocyanins, pigments that give the petals their colored appearance and have anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial properties to lower blood pressure and protect against disease.
Applications
Micro Flowers Blend™ is best suited as an edible accent as the flower’s delicate nature is preserved when added at the end of preparations to avoid wilting. The entire flower is edible, and it is important to note that each flower variety within the blend will contain a different flavor. The flowers should be individually sampled before used as an edible garnish to understand the bloom’s unique flavor profile. Small groupings of flowers can also be sampled together to experience the flavor of consuming multiple blossoms in one bite. Micro Flowers Blend™ can be sprinkled over salads, floated over soups and curries, placed into fruit bowls, or used as a garnish for sushi and sashimi. The flowers can also be used to decorate seafood dishes such as calamari, ceviche, and shrimp cocktail, or strategically placed on pasta, seafood, sandwiches, appetizers, and other main plates for added aesthetic. In addition to using the flowers in their natural form, the blooms can be frozen into ice cubes as a festive element, wrapped into fresh spring rolls, or they can be pressed into cookies and soft cheeses for an elevated, whimsical appearance. Micro Flowers Blend™ can also be used to accent desserts such as cakes, scones, sorbets, crème brulee, cookies, puddings, and tarts, or they can be used as a garnish in craft cocktails and mocktails. Micro Flowers Blend™ pairs well with chocolate, fruits such as coconut, strawberries, lemons, passionfruit, mango, and cherries, herbs, including lavender, parsley, and mint, cheeses such as goat, brie, and blue, leafy greens, and springtime vegetables, including asparagus, peas, green garlic, and fava beans. Whole MicroFlowers™ should be used immediately for the best quality and flower and will keep 2 to 4 days when stored in a sealed container in the refrigerator.
Ethnic/Cultural Info
MicroFlowers™, such as the Micro Flowers Blend™, have contributed to the rise of do-it-yourself, or diy cocktail kits in the United States during the coronavirus pandemic. Many restaurants had to remain closed or only open for takeout for over a year in 2020, forcing them to expand their services to offer at-home flavor experiences. Cocktails provide a moment of escapism and transport consumers to exotic destinations using unique ingredients with varying flavors, textures, and aromas. Learning to craft unusual drinks also allows consumers to indulge in new experiences without having to leave the safety of their homes. Within diy cocktail kits, restaurants curate the kit with ingredients to craft a satisfying beverage. Mixologists also often offer a virtual happy hour to walk participants through making the cocktail. This web-based meeting develops a sense of connection to the outside world and helps to alleviate quarantine routine and boredom. MicroFlowers™ have become a favored element in diy kits as the tiny blooms are easily transported in to-go containers and provide an elevated visual impact. The flowers can be used to express feelings or personality in the cocktail through color, shape, and flavor, and they are representative of savoring the present moment, as the delicate blooms capture attention and can contribute a subtle but dramatic impact.
