Description/Taste
RazzMatazz® grapes are small to medium in size, about the size of a nickel, and are round to oval in shape, growing in medium, tightly packed clusters. The dark red to purple skin is thin, smooth, crisp, and creates a popping sensation when consumed. The flesh is translucent, juicy, tender, soft, and seedless, though a few undeveloped seeds may be present but are undetectable. RazzMatazz® grapes have a distinct floral aroma with a mild and sweet, fruity flavor.
Seasons/Availability
RazzMatazz® grapes are available in the early fall through winter.
Current Facts
RazzMatazz® grapes, botanically classified as Vitis rotundifolia, grow on a deciduous perennial vine and are members of the Vitaceae family. RazzMatazz® grapes were created in North Carolina and were developed out of a demand for a table grape that is highly resistant to disease and insects while having thin skin and the pleasing texture of a regular table grape. A cross between a vitis vinifera variety and a muscadine grape, RazzMatazz® grapes are the world’s first continually fruiting grape, growing fruit all season long along the vine, and can produce up to twenty-four clusters per shoot versus the average two to three clusters for regular varieties.
Nutritional Value
RazzMatazz® grapes are an excellent source of vitamin C and antioxidants, and also contain potassium, calcium, and phosphorus.
Applications
RazzMatazz® grapes are best suited for raw applications and are most commonly consumed fresh, out of hand. They can be served on cheese plates, sliced and mixed in with green salads or fruit salads, or served alone as a sweet snack. RazzMatazz® grapes can also be boiled and made into jellies, jams, and wine. RazzMatazz® grapes pair well with olives, rosemary, basil, mint, cheeses such as brie, swiss, and gruyere, meats such as chicken, fish, pork, sausage, and brisket, brussels sprouts, sweet potatoes, apples, walnuts, and pecans. They will keep one to two weeks when stored in a perforated plastic bag in the refrigerator.
Ethnic/Cultural Info
The development of RazzMatazz® grapes marks a new era of table grapes that provide home gardeners with a vigorous variety that is highly resistant to disease and pests. In some regions, RazzMatazz® grapes can also be grown without fungicidal spray. These grapes are patented as a whole new grape cultivar and are important for home gardens because they provide consumers with a steady supply of seedless, flavorful table grapes throughout the entire growing season. They can also be grown in small spaces such as a container.
Geography/History
RazzMatazz® grapes were created in 2007 by grape breeder Jeff Bloodworth in North Carolina in an effort to create a hardy and flavorful table grape with thin skin. The grapes were introduced to the market by Gurney’s Seed & Nursery Co., and today RazzMatazz® grapes are only available through Gurney’s online seed and plant catalog and select specialty partners across the United States.
