Current Facts
The Watermelom is botanically classified as Citrullus lanatus, and a member of the cucumber family, Cucurbitaceae. It is a flowering and fruiting vine that is not a member of the genus Cucumis, and therefore technically not botanically classified as a melon but rather a specialized type of large berry also known as a pepo or false berry. It is a diverse genus with over 1200 known varieties, ranging in size, color and shape.
