Description/Taste
Petite® Italian Basil greens are small in size, averaging 10-12 centimeters in length, and are broad, flat, and slightly oval in shape tapering to a small point at the non-stem end. The bright green leaves are smooth, thin, and pliable with a prominent central vein and many smaller veins traveling across the surface. The leaves also connect to a thin, short, and edible green stem. Petite® Italian Basil greens are crisp, tender, and aromatic with a robust, but still mild flavor of mint, anise, and pepper.
Seasons/Availability
Petite® Italian Basil is available year-round.
Current Facts
Petite® Italian Basil is an early harvest of the mature herb and is a part of a trademarked line of specialty greens grown by Fresh Origins Farm in San Diego, California. Designed to be slightly larger than microgreens, Petite® Italian Basil is harvested 4-6 weeks after sowing. Petite® Italian Basil can be used in a variety of culinary applications that call for basil and can be used as a garnish to enhance the visual appeal, texture, and flavor of a dish. Today both restaurant chefs and home chefs enjoy using the Petite® Green in their recipes for a robust flavor with a tender and crisp texture.
Nutritional Value
Petite® Italian Basil contains iron, potassium, some dietary fiber, and vitamins A, C, and K.
Applications
Petite® Italian Basil greens are best suited for raw applications as their delicate nature will cause them to wilt after prolonged exposure to heat. Though somewhat fragile, Petite® Italian basil greens offer a more robust flavor and substantial texture than micro basil and can withstand dressings and vinaigrettes. They can be used as an edible garnish for tomato-based dishes, especially in raw heirloom salads with fresh cheeses or pasta, mixed into salads, or even floated on soups for an added fresh flavor. They can also be muddled into a drink or garnished on top of seafood and meat dishes. Petite® Italian Basil greens may be used interchangeably with other fully-grown sweet basil varieties in recipes and offer a subtler flavor and delicate texture. The aromatic flavor of Petite® Italian Basil pairs well with tomatoes, garlic, onion, corn, beans, cauliflower, pear, mint, strawberry, and cow’s milk cheeses. They will keep 7-10 days when stored unwashed, dry, and in a sealed container in the refrigerator. It is recommended to use Petite® Italian Basil immediately for optimum flavor.
