The leaves are vibrantly colored with a bright green center, extending to a mottled center ring comprised of varying orange, green, and purple hues, bleeding into light yellow-green edging. The leaves are connected to thin, crunchy stems and display prominent veining stretching to the edge of each scallop. They also showcase a smooth and velvety feel with a juicy and succulent texture. Sunset Geranium Leaf™ has a vegetal, woodsy, and floral aroma and a strong tart flavor with a mildly bitter finish.
Seasons/Availability
Sunset Geranium Leaf™ is available year-round.
Current Facts
Sunset Geranium Leaf™ is harvested from various pelargonium plants, likely the Mrs. Pollock variety, a bushy, evergreen perennial belonging to a group of 250 plants commonly called geraniums. Geraniums and pelargoniums are members of the same plant family, Geraniaceae, but pelargoniums were mislabeled as geraniums when introduced to Europe in the 17th century, and the terminology has stayed with the plant since. Sunset Geranium Leaf™ is part of a boutique line of specialty greens developed by Fresh Origins Farm in San Marcos, California. The plants are grown year-round and in-house in sprawling, sustainably-minded greenhouses. Sunset Geranium Leaf™ is designed to add flavor and texture to a variety of sweet, savory, and beverage recipes.
Nutritional Value
The nutritional composition of Sunset Geranium Leaf™ has not been thoroughly studied, but the leaves of pelargonium varieties are used as natural remedies for a variety of ailments. The essential oils within the leaves are believed to reduce stress, often being made into tea. The leaves are also believed to help reduce inflammation, boost immunity, and relieve respiratory disorders when ingested.
Applications
Sunset Geranium Leaf™ is best suited as an edible garnish and provides textural, visual, and flavorful elements to various dishes and beverages. The tender, crisp greens are best showcased when consumed fresh and should be added at the end of plating to avoid wilting. Sunset Geranium Leaf™ is commonly used to decorate cakes, tarts, ice cream, sorbet, and other desserts, but the herbs can also be floated atop soups, tossed into salads, or mixed with fresh fruit and yogurt. Sunset Geranium Leaf™ is also popular for use in mixology, often muddled into cocktails, garnished over fruit punches, or stirred into teas and sparkling beverages. Sunset Geranium Leaf™ pairs well with fruits such as watermelon, berries, and citrus, meats such as poultry, veal, and turkey, seafood, herbs such as parsley, cilantro, basil, and tarragon, watercress, nasturtiums, chocolate, cucumbers, peas, and squash. Sunset Geranium Leaf™ will generally keep 5 to 7 days stored in the refrigerator in a sealed container.
