The Garden of... grows high-quality vegetables in the fertile soil of the Santa Ynez Valley, where warm California days combine with cool, moist nights by air from the nearby Pacific Ocean. Shu and Debby Takikawa combine generational knowledge and farm apprenticeship experience to grow high-quality, flavorful lettuces, cabbages, carrots, and other vegetables. French butter lettuce is medium to large variety with a rounded shape. The leaves display varying green to deep purple hues and have a delicate and tender texture with a slightly ruffled appearance. French Butter lettuce is crisp with a nutty, mild, and sweet flavor with bitter and earthy nuances.

Butter lettuce is a leaf lettuce. Leaf varieties have loose heads and are known as the "cut and come again" lettuces as they can be harvested multiple times from a single plant. Butter lettuce are more heat-tolerant than head lettuce.
