The skin is yellow-green with some russeting, prominent lenticels, and speckling throughout. The flesh is white with hints of yellow and green and is fine-grained and buttery encasing a central core containing very small, light brown seeds. When ripe, Bella Lucrative pears are aromatic, juicy, and have a musky and sweet flavor with light notes of butterscotch.
Seasons/Availability
Bella Lucrative pears are available in early to mid-fall.
Current Facts
Bella Lucrative pears, botanically classified as Pyrus communis, grow on vigorous, standard trees that can reach over seven meters in height, can also grow dwarf-sized trees, and are members of the Rosaceae family along with apricots, apples, and peaches. Also known as Belle Lucrative, Fondante d’Automne, Bergamot Lucrative, Seigneur d’Esperen, and Brurre Lucrative, Bella Lucrative is an antique pear bred in the early 1800s. Though they were favored for their juicy and buttery flesh, Bella Lucrative pears were regarded as too small and too irregularly shaped for commercial use and were instead advertised as a valuable home orchard tree for their resistance to disease and prolific nature.
Nutritional Value
Bella Lucrative pears contain fiber, vitamin C, and potassium.
Applications
Bella Lucrative pears are best suited for raw applications as their small size, and moist flesh is showcased when consumed fresh, out-out-hand. The pears should be removed from the tree before they reach full maturity and allowed to ripen at room temperature to maximize flavor and texture. They can be sliced and mixed in with fruit salads or leafy green salads, layered in sandwiches or on top of pizza, or sliced over meats such as pork and beef. Bella Lucrative pears compliment arugula, fennel, radicchio, carrots, apple, garlic, onion, shallots, walnuts, and pine nuts. They will keep 7-10 days when stored at room temperature and for 2-3 weeks when stored in the refrigerator.
Ethnic/Cultural Info
One of the most prominent nicknames for the Bella Lucrative pear is Fondante d’Automne. In French, Fondante translates to mean melting or to describe a thick, creamy sugar paste, and this paste is commonly used as the base of many candies. Known for its fine-grained, sweet, and buttery flesh, Bella Lucrative pears earned the nickname Fondante d’Automne as the pear’s flesh texture is similar to the loosely translated description of a melting, sugar paste of autumn.
Geography/History
Bella Lucrative pears were bred in Belgium in the early 1800s and soon made their way to the London Horticultural Society's gardens in Chiswick, England. They were then planted in the United States at the Pomological Garden in Salem, Massachusetts in the mid-1830s, and today Bella Lucrative pears can be found at select farmers markets and specialty grocers in the United States and Europe.
