Current Facts
Quite different from traditional European pears, this fruit has never developed into a large commercial market in the United States. Asian pears are, however, very popular in China, Korea and Japan.
Nutritional Value
Providing a source of vitamin C, pears offer carbohydrates, dietary fiber and a tad of protein, calcium and fat. One medium pear contains about 100 calories. Having high levels of pectin and boron, studies show pectin inhibits certain cancers while boron promotes the stimulation of electrical activity in the brain. Boron also helps the body to retain calcium in the prevention of osteoporosis.
Applications
Exceptionally sweet, this tender pear is at its very best eaten fresh simply out of hand. Slices make attractive edible garnish for salads and hot or cold sandwiches. Nutmeg, cinnamon and ginger enhance flavor. Very gently poach in light syrup to serve on plain or angel food cake. Top with vanilla ice cream. To store, ripen at room temperature. Refrigerate ripe fruit for only a day or two to preserve flavor.
Geography/History
Asian pears are generally classified into three types: pear-shaped with russet or green skin; round or flat with green to yellow skin; and round or flat with bronze-colored skin with a faint bronze-russet. Asian pears marketed in the United States are round except for two Chinese varieties, the yellowish-green Ya Li and Tsu Li. The two recognized species of Asian pears are Pyrus pyriformis and P. ussurensis. There are actually many varieties, cultivars and hybrids and no one description can rightfully describe the entire myriad of these exotic pears. Derived from a very old Asian variety of excellent quality, white Chinese Yali pears are imported from their country of origin, China. The Yali pear, also known as Ya Li, is especially prized and one of the most important pears grown in its home country.
