Description/Taste
Vulcan lettuce has crimson red tinted leaves that give way to green midribs and a succulent translucent pale green base. Its leaves are ruffled with a flexible, buttery texture and a lean, mild flavor.
Seasons/Availability
Vulcan lettuce is available winter through early spring.
Current Facts
There are four lettuce type classifications: Head, Romaine, loose Leaf and Butterhead. Vulcan lettuce is an early maturing loose Red Leaf variety. It is a hardy, slow to bolt and vigorous cut-and-come-again lettuce that offers two to three harvests per season.
Applications
Because of Vulcan lettuce's brilliant texture and mild flavor, it is a versatile choice for many salad types. Its mild flavor won't overwhelm light dressings, its texture melds well with accompanying textures and its colors brighten salads, sandwiches and cold appetizers.
Geography/History
Vulcan lettuce is a cool weather crop as are most lettuce varieties. It grows best in fertile soil with minimal to sufficient irrigation, warm days and cool nights. It is a great home gardner's lettuce and it can be planted in containers and raised beds. Harvesting healthy cut-and-come-again lettuce is quite simple: once the leaves have reached an optimal height of four to six inches cut them just above the base leaving less than an inch for continued growth.
