Mixed heirloom eggplants offer a colorful variety of eggplants, which may include Caliope, white, baby black bell or green apple. Each variety is sweeter and more tender than the mature purple eggplant as they are picked when young.

Eggplants are a part of the Solanaceae or nightshade family. Through genetic mapping it has been determined that all eggplant species have shared ancestry with tomatoes, potatoes, and peppers. Although grown and treated as a vegetable, eggplants are actually a perennial fruit as it bears seeds within its body. Thus it is botanically classified as a berry.
