Description/Taste
Flavorino is a mini plum tomato with the characteristic egg-like shape, bright red, smooth, thick skin of other plum tomato varieties. Flavorino plum tomatoes grow in a chain-like pattern along a small branch with about 8 to 12 fruits on each branch. A single fruit can weigh between 35 and 40 grams, its flesh has few seeds, high sugar and acid levels, and low moisture content. They are ideal for cooking down into a tomato sauce or paste. The disease-resistant plants grow to an average of four to six feet, and because this is a determinate plant, the fruits will grow to a set height and ripen about the same time, producing one large crop typically toward the end of the season.
Seasons/Availability
Flavorino plum tomatoes are available in the summer months.
Current Facts
Flavorino plum tomatoes are a member of the Solanaceae family along with the potato, eggplant and tobacco. Tomatoes, originally termed Solanum lycopersicum, are botanically referred to as Lycopersicon esculentum, although modern studies are encouraging a return to the original classification. Flavorino plum tomatoes is a hybrid variety discovered in 2003 by De Ruiter Seeds.
