Description/Taste
The Black Emerald is a medium sized grape, round to oval in shape and jet black with a light waxy bloom. The translucent flesh is firm with a snappy crunch. Its sweet flavor is balanced with a moderate acidity. Compared to the concord, Vitis labrusca, which can be candy-like or "foxy" in flavor, the Black Emerald is considered a neutral tasting grape.
Seasons/Availability
Black Emerald grapes are available in the late spring and summer.
Current Facts
The Black Emerald grape is an early ripening, seedless black variety of Vitis vinifera developed by David Ramming and Ron Tarailo of the USDA-ARS in Fresno, California. It is the result of seven generations of selected breeding and the hybridization of numerous parents, including Blackrose, Muscat of Alexandria, Sultanina, Flame Seedless, Perlette and Calmeria. There are less than 40 hectares of Black Emerald in commercial production to date.
