Description/Taste
Black lentils are very small lentils, about 6 millimeters wide. They have thin, shiny, jet-black skin. Once peeled or split, the Black lentils have a yellow core. Cooked Black lentils will keep their shape but will lose their color during the process and turn greenish-black. The texture of cooked lentils is soft with an earthy, nutty flavor.

Black lentils are botanically known as Lens culinaris and are one of the earliest cultivated crops. The plant is native to the Nile, Tigris, and Euphrates Valleys in the Middle East. Black lentils are also known as Black Beluga because of its shiny black skin and small size, resembling that of caviar.
