Cinnamon Spice apples are medium in size and fairly round in shape. The attractive dark wine-red skin is overlaid, sometimes streaked, on a yellow-green background. The name of this apple is inspired by the notes of cinnamon discernable in some of the fits’ flavor. It is sometimes described as tasting similar to an apple pie because of the spice. More prominent in the flavor of all Cinnamon Spice apple fruits is the sweetness. The Cinnamon Spice apple tree grows upright with medium vigor and has good disease resistance.
Cinnamon Spice apples are available in the fall through early winter.
Cinnamon Spice apples are an heirloom variety of Malus domestica of indeterminate origin found growing in California in the 1980s. It may be the same variety as Laxton’s Fortune apple from England, but available evidence is not conclusive.
Apples are made up of water and carbohydrates, along with some other important nutrients. One medium apple has about 17 percent of the daily recommended intake of fiber, which lowers blood sugar levels and contributes to digestive system health. The vitamin C and other antioxidants in apples are anti-inflammatory and support immune system functioning.
Cinnamon Spice apples are a good multi-purpose apple, useful for fresh eating, cooking, sauce, and cider/juice. Bake into pies or crisps, cook down into a flavorful applesauce, or use in recipes that call for onions, celery root, or cranberries in the fall. Cinnamon Spice apples can be stored for one to two months in cool, dry conditions such as a refrigerator or a dry basement.
Antique or heirloom apples such as the Cinnamon Spice have been growing in popularity in recent years. Back when the Cinnamon Spice apple was (re)discovered in California in the 1980s, many heirloom apples had mostly disappeared and were hard to find intores or nurseries. This variety was one of the first to be sold to consumers as trees, as part of the Living Tree Center nursery’s push to spread older varieties of apples that were more interesting and flavorful than the industry standard.
The Cinnamon Spice apple was found growing in Bolinas, California, north of San Francisco in the 1980s. The Living Tree Center nursery in Bolinas began selling Cinnamon Spice apple trees soon after. This tree does best growing in the south or in coastal areas, and can tolerate more heat then many varieties.
