Description/Taste
Dried blueberries have a deep rich blue color and become shriveled when they are dried. They resemble raisins and have a high moisture content with a sweet blueberry taste.

Dried blueberries provide a good source of vitamin C, dietary fiber and are low in fat and sodium. They are high in anti-oxidants and rich in minerals such as potassium, magnesium and manganese. They have about 80 calories per cup.
Applications
Dried blueberries can be eaten as a snack or added to any baked goods such as muffins, cakes, pies, pastries, cookies or cereals. They can also be added to salads, jams and soups.
Geography/History
Blueberries are part of the genus Vaccinium and come from a perennial flowering plant that produces the blueberry fruit. They are found growing throughout North America, Europe and recently New Zealand. Blueberries are also known as "bilberries, whortleberries and hurtleberries" and are indigenous to North America. They are recognized by their deep blue color and sweet flavor. Native Americans referred to them as "star berries" and used them as a food source, clothing dye and for medicinal purposes. The state of Maine produces 25% of the low-bush variety making it the largest producer in the world. They were not widely consumed in the United States until the Civil War era, where canned blueberries were sent to soldiers. They became commercially available in 1916 and began large scale cultivation in the 20th century.
