Geography/History
The papaya is a short lived, woody shrub and must be in a warm climate year round. It is native to the tropics of South and Central America and was first cultivated in Mexico. This fruit was called the "fruit of angels" by Christopher Columbus and could be found in all tropical regions of the world by 1650. Today, Hawaii is the only state in the U.S. that produces papayas.
