Description/Taste
Turmeric is native to Southern Asia, is grown in tropical regions and is also referred to as “yellow ginger”. A member of the ginger family and described as a rhizomatous, perennial plant; turmeric is an essential ingredient in many Thai, Indian and Persian dishes. It is characterized as having a slightly bitter, pungent and warm flavor similar to ginger root. It has a bright orange color that is often used in providing color to many dishes, in addition to curry sauces, mustards and even ice creams.

Used in South Asian and Middle Eastern cuisine.
Geography/History
Turmeric is native to tropical South Asia and needs temperatures between 20 and 30 degrees Celcius. Plants are gathered annually for their rhizomes. In medieval Europe, Turmeric became known as Indian Saffron since it was used as an alternative to the far more expensive saffron spice.
