Description/Taste
Micro Broccoli is very small in size, measuring approximately 1 cm in height, and is comprised of two heart-shaped leaves that grow in pairs from a long, thin stem. Each leaf has a single vein running along its underside and a vibrant green hue, while the stem is almost translucent white with a rosy tone. The leaf is crisp and crunchy with a succulent quality and has a mildly vegetal, herbaceous, and sweet flavor with a subtle peppery finish.
Seasons/Availability
MicroGreen Broccoli is available year-round.
Ethnic/Cultural Info
For much of its early history, broccoli was often confused with its parent plant cauliflower. It didn't make it to North America until the early 19th century when it was brought by Italian immigrants, and it took another century for it to become widely known and accepted.
Geography/History
Broccoli originated from wild cabbage, which is native to parts of Europe. It is not certain whether or not Romans cultivated it, but it is clear that it was being enjoyed in Italy well before the rest of the world.
