Description/Taste
Micro Herb Mix™ consists of small leaves connected to slender stems, and the leaves range in shape from flat, elongated, and oval to serrated, frilly, and deeply lobed. The leaves also vary in color from dark green to a deep red, burgundy hue. Micro Herb Mix™ has a soft, crisp, succulent, and tender consistency. Within the mix, each microgreen has a distinct herbal flavor, including notes of basil, anise, onion, and mint, but in combination, the mix provides a fragrant blend of savory, subtly sweet, vegetal, pungent, and earthy flavors.
Seasons/Availability
Micro Herb Mix™ is available year-round.
Current Facts
Micro Herb Mix™ is a blend of young, edible seedlings that are a part of a trademarked line of specialty microgreens grown by Fresh Origins Farm in San Diego, California. The herbaceous mix is a modern twist on classic herbs that are foundationally used in cooking. Fresh Origins has developed over thirty curated microgreens mixes to provide flavorful ingredients for chefs year-round, and Micro Herb Mix™ incorporates microgreens such as chives, basil, chervil, fennel, marjoram, and several other greens to create a balanced, fresh profile. The microgreens are generally harvested 1 to 2 weeks after sowing, and chefs use the herbs to build complexity within dishes. Micro Herb Mix™ also adds visual depth with its multi-colored, expressive appearance and can be individually placed on small plates or sprinkled across larger preparations for greater impact.
Nutritional Value
Micro Herb Mix™ provides multiple vitamins and minerals due to its mixture of herbs with unique nutritional properties. The greens are a source of fiber, magnesium, calcium, potassium, iron, and phosphorus, and they also contain some vitamins A and C, which are antioxidants that have been shown to help strengthen the immune system. It is important to note that the vitamins and minerals are found primarily within the leaves and not in the stems of the microgreens. Growing conditions also significantly impact the nutritional content, and Fresh Origins cultivates their microgreens in a natural setting, an ideal climate for healthy, optimal greens.
Applications
Micro Herb Mix™ is best used fresh as an edible garnish to create a lasting impression. The delicate greens cannot withstand high heat and should be added at the end of the cooking process to prevent the leaves from wilting. Micro Herb Mix™ can be folded into green salads, floated over soups, paired with sauteed vegetables, or layered as a bed of greens for seafood and roasted meats. The microgreens can also be placed into sandwiches, sprinkled over fresh fruit salads, topped over pasta and pizza, or stirred into rice-based dishes. Since the mix is comprised of essential culinary herbs, Micro Herb Mix™ often complements flavors commonly found in Italian and Latin and Hispanic cuisine and can be also be used as a fresh garnish to deepen flavors of holiday dishes such as roasted turkey, stuffing, or meatloaf. Micro Herb Mix™ pairs well with meats such as pork, poultry, turkey, and steak, fish, crustaceans, fruits such as pears, watermelon, and apples, maple syrup, and edible flowers such as marigolds. Micro Herb Mix™ will generally keep 5 to 7 days stored in the refrigerator in a sealed container.
