Description/Taste
Purple guavas are round, muddy green to dark purple, smooth skinned guavas. The inner pulp is a bright and translucent purple, with a slightly acidic and sweet flavor. The fleshy pulp surrounds multiple small, hard seeds. Purple guavas are typically eaten fresh.
Seasons/Availability
Purple guavas are available in the late spring and mid-summer months.
Current Facts
A very rare find outside of Brazil, the purple guava is a member of the Myrtaceae family, known botanically known as Psidium rufum and is also known as Araca-cagao and Araca-perinha. Purple guavas originated in Brazil and are native to the higher altitude forests of Bahia, Rio de Janeiro, Minas Gerais and Sao Paulo. These fruits are harvested in the wild and have are not yet commercially cultivated.
