Description/Taste
Purple daikon radish are globular to oblong in shape with a tapered point on one end. This variety of daikon can be recognized by its bi-coloring that is a violet purple towards the leafy green tops and becomes a creamy white towards the tapered end. The inner flesh is very crisp, has a bright purple and white inner flesh that offers a very mild radish flavor.

Purple daikon radish are available in the early spring and fall months.

The Purple daikon radish is botanically classified as Raphanus sativus var. longipinnatus and is a member of the Brassicaceae or mustard family. The word ‘Diakon’ is Japanese for “great root”. Daikon radish is a cool weather root vegetable grown primarily for its tuber though the entire plant is edible.
