Description/Taste
Red spinach produces dark green glossy leaves with deep wine-red veins and stems that keep their color when cooked. They are round and smooth with just a slightly crumpled surface. Red spinach has a sweet vegetal flavor and a nutty finish. Its delicate texture usually lends it to raw applications, and when cooked it loses most of its volume.
Seasons/Availability
Red spinach is available year-round with peak harvests during the cool temperatures of spring and fall.
Current Facts
Red spinach, botanically classified as Spinacia oleracea, is primarily harvested as baby green. This variety from Black Sheep Produce is the Red Kitten seed variety, a unique red-veined spinach usually eaten raw in salad blends.
