Red Spring Onion
Estimated Inventory, bunch : 0
Description/Taste
Red Spring onions have a petite narrow root and a moist papery skin that is more purple than red. They have a juicy white flesh made of thin render layers and a flavor that is savory and sweet. Their mild flavor lacks the bite of a mature onion due to the low sulphuric content. Red Spring onions are primarily harvested for their root rather than green stem which is hollow and dry with a more pungent flavor.
Seasons/Availability
Red Spring onions are available year-round with peak season from late winter to early spring.
Current Facts
Spring onions are the prematurely harvested growth of the common onion known botanically as Allium cepa. They are planted closely together so as to inhibit any bulbous development of the root and therefore retain a slender shape. Spring onions are not to be confused with scallions which are a different species and have roots that will remain thin and narrow into maturity.
