Description/Taste
The Red walnut is known for being larger and sweeter than regular brown walnuts. These walnuts have a less acidic taste and have a higher oil content. Their hard shell is a light tan color, like most English Walnuts. The skin of the walnut meet is vibrant, dark cherry red and the meat itself is a very light colored cream.

Red walnuts are available in the fall and winter months.
Current Facts
The Red walnut was first developed at the University of California at Davis by naturally grafting a cutting from the Persian red-skinned walnut onto the creamier tasting English walnut tree. This variety has only been available in the commercial market for the past three years but is rapidly gaining popularity. The walnut was first cultivated in California by the Franciscan Fathers in the late 1700s, and was known as the “mission” walnut.
