Description/Taste
Sungold Tomatoes are tiny cherry tomatoes that bear the color of an orange sun. They have an exceptionally sweet and fruity flavor.
Seasons/Availability
Late June through September
Current Facts
Sungold fruits weigh about a half-ounce each, and are borne in long trusses on tall (indeterminate) vines that begin to bear ripe fruit 57 days after transplanting. The tomatoes remain firmer when ripe than do most cherry tomatoes.
Applications
Sungolds make for a great simple salad or as an accompaniment to a main course. For pasta, cook down the cherry tomatoes just until they burst. Shave some fine cheese over it. Add to chunky gazpachos. Poach cherry tomatoes in olive oil on the vine, cut off the vine but leave the stem and finish on fish. Roast tomatoes to make a vinaigrette. Roast, puree and add oil and vinegar. Saute with jalapenos, garlic and the green part of green onions for a side dish.
Geography/History
Sungolds were introduced to British and American gardeners in 1992 by the British mail order seed company Thompson and Morgan after taste tests that resulted in the rating "sweetest tomato ever."
