Description/Taste
JAZZ™ apples are a small to medium-sized varietal, averaging 6 to 7 centimeters in diameter, and have a conical to round appearance with flat shoulders and a semi-thick green-brown stem. The apple’s skin is moderately thick, smooth, glossy, and slightly greasy, covered in faint yellow lenticels. The skin also has a yellow-green base, almost entirely enveloped in dark red blush and striping. Underneath the surface, the white flesh is very firm, dense, and textured with a crunchy consistency. The flesh is also aqueous and aromatic, encasing a central core filled with tiny black-brown seeds. JAZZ™ apples have a refreshing and balanced sweet-tart flavor with tangy, subtly floral, and fruity undertones reminiscent of pears.

JAZZ™ apples, botanically classified as Malus domestica, are a trademarked variety belonging to the Rosaceae family. The cultivar was developed in New Zealand in the late 20th century and was selected as an improved variety of its parent apples braeburn and royal gala. JAZZ™ apples are a club variety, regulated by ENZA, formerly known as the New Zealand Apple and Pear Marketing Board. ENZA holds the global rights to JAZZ™ apples and operates under T&G Global, meaning all orchards that produce the cultivar must obtain permission and a license to cultivate the apples. JAZZ™ apples are promoted as a healthy snack apple with a balanced, sweet, and tangy flavor. The fruits can be easily transported without suffering damage and are consumed as an on-the-go fruit for various activities, including work, school, and parks. JAZZ™ apples are also publicized for their firm flesh, suited for baked preparations, as the flesh holds its shape when heated.

JAZZ™ apples have a dense, crisp consistency lending a prominent crunch to bite-sized appetizers served with cheese and fresh herbs, combined into overnight oats, or used as a fresh topping over tacos, pancakes, and waffles. Apple slices can also be integrated into fresh spring rolls, dipped in chocolate, or sprinkled in cinnamon and drizzled in caramel. In addition to fresh preparations, JAZZ™ apples hold their shape well in baked goods and can be incorporated into crisps, cobblers, bread, muffins, pies, and cakes, or they can be hollowed, stuffed, and baked. Try adding JAZZ™ apples to tarts, turnovers, and dumplings or simmering the fruits into marmalade as a sweet addition. The fruits can also be cooked into savory roasted meat dishes, minced and stirred into stuffing, or chopped into creamy casseroles. Beyond culinary dishes, JAZZ™ apples can be blended into smoothies or pressed into juice for cocktails, fruit punches, and carbonated beverages. JAZZ™ apples pair well with herbs such as parsley, mint, and rosemary, meats including beef, pork, turkey, and pork, caramel, chocolate, vanilla, cheeses such as goat, cheddar, and gouda, kale, onions, and cranberries. JAZZ™ apples are sometimes nicknamed Lawyer apples among growers due to their strict cultivation requirements as a club or managed variety. Club varieties provide companies with complete control over the branding, cultivation, pricing, and release of modern apple cultivars. This allows companies to exclusively license the apples to select growers to ensure that the variety is not overproduced, driving prices low. ENZA controls the marketing and brand story of JAZZ™ apples, promoting the apples through social media posts, billboards, online press coverage, and regional events worldwide to increase brand awareness. Club apples have become common in commercial markets despite their strict requirements and are growing in popularity among consumers for their appearance, flavor, and hardiness. Experts estimate that one in seven apples is presently classified as a club cultivar in global markets. This niche apple sector continues to grow as new varieties are heavily promoted to consumers. JAZZ™ apples are just one of several apples released from ENZA in partnership with New Zealand’s Plant and Food Research Institute created with the export market in mind. Geography/History
JAZZ™ apples were developed in 1985 from a collaboration between the Plant and Food Research Institute and ENZA, also known as Enzafruit, at Goddard Lane, Havelock North in Hawkes Bay, New Zealand. The variety was created by apple breeder Allen White from a cross between royal gala apples and braeburn apples and was selected as a new cultivar, originally named Scifresh. Commercial production of Scifresh apples began in New Zealand in the late 20th and early 21st centuries. In 2001, a patent for the new variety was filed and granted in 2003 under the US Plant Patent #13888P3. Scifresh apples were eventually renamed JAZZ™ apples as a part of a targeted marketing plan and were released to select growers in both hemispheres. Today JAZZ™ apples are cultivated in various regions worldwide for year-round production, and each grower must be approved and licensed under ENZA, a division of T&G Global, to control the quantity and quality of the JAZZ™ apples being released. JAZZ™ apples are produced in New Zealand, Australia, Chile, Europe, the United Kingdom, and in Washington State of the United States.
