The Smitten apple is medium to large and often has ribs on its round form. The skin is yellow overlaid with a red blush and red streaks, similar to a Gala. The yellow flesh has a firm, crisp, and fine-grained texture, and has both sweet and acidic notes. The flavor contains hints of cider, flowers, oranges, and wine, though in general the flavor is subtle rather than overpowering.
Smitten apples are available from spring through early winter.
Smitten apples are a new variety of Malus domestica first bred in New Zealand by Prevar. Its parents are not named varieties on the market, but its grandparents are Falstaff, Fiesta, Braeburn, and Gala.
Apples have approximately 100 calories each, along with several key nutrients. They contain about a fifth of the daily recommended value of dietary fiber, along with Vitamin C and small amounts of Vitamin A, calcium, and iron. Apples do not have cholesterol, sodium, fat, or protein.
Enjoy Smitten apples fresh out of hand to enjoy their delicious and subtle taste. Pair with cheese or peanut butter for a snack. They can also be cooked or baked into desserts or with pork or chicken. This apple stores fairly well under cool, dry conditions.
In the modern apple breeding world, many varieties are produced by large companies that focus on developing new apples to bring to market. Smittens are one such example of this modern way of developing and selling apples, which is common in places such as New Zealand and the United States.
This variety was developed by Prevar and New Zealand’s plant research program and is marketed exclusively by Seventeen Limited in New Zealand. Smitten apples were first grown in 1995, but not named until 2010. Today they are also grown in Australia, the United Kingdom and Washington State. In the US they are grown and marketed by Pegasus Premium Fruit Company.
