Chive blossoms are the spherical light violet blossoms that sit atop the blade-like stems of the chive plant. The stems grow in clusters and are long, flat, slender and dark green in color. When mature chives can grow to 50 centimeters in height. The blossoms consist of tiny, star-shaped flowers and measure 5 centimeters in diameter. The blossoms have a light garlic scent with a mild floral undertone. Chive blossoms have a grassy, earthy flavor with a distinct garlic taste.
Chive Blossoms are available for a very short season during the summer.
The smallest and mildest member of the large Allium group and of the species Allium schienoprasum, chive blossoms are a hardy perennial belonging to the onion family.
Members of the Allium family such as onions, garlic and chives have naturally occurring antibiotic properties and have long been used to aid in digestion, fight off colds and boost the immune system.
The origin of chive blossoms is uncertain. Some sources say they are native to northern Europe and parts of North America and others say they may have had their beginning in Central Asia.
